The Limits of Prompt Engineering

Early on, the common belief was that writing better prompts would solve most problems with AI systems. Craft the perfect instruction and you get the perfect output. But prompts are static artifacts, while the context an agent operates in changes constantly — new files are read, tools produce results, the conversation grows.

How Context Grows

During a long-running task, every tool call adds its result to the context window. The conversation history expands with each turn. After several iterations of reading files, executing commands, and processing results, the accumulated context can become massive.
